Elementals, are they real or just a Marvel Comic creation? It is said that Elementals are magical entities who personify the forces of nature and control the natural powers of their element. The mythic being described in the occult world of the Alchemical Elemental comes from the European Renaissance, in and around the 16th Century. There are four elemental categories: gnomes, undines, sylphs and salamanders. These creatures relate directly to the classical elements of antiquity: earth, water, air and fire. Aether, also known as quintessence, was not assigned as an Elemental, or so the tale goes. The elementals come from folklore, animism, anthropomorphism, and the building blocks of nature. With gnomes for earth, undine’s being of water, sylph of the air, and salamanders of the fire, it is as if the Elementals had been born of and conceived by Paracelsus in the 16th century.
Elementals, which are said to be nature spirits are thought to be from the universal era of ancient religions which embodied the animist religion. This belief still exists among people who believe that all things possess life, such as occultists and neo-pagan witches. Elementals are considered to have supernatural power and are thought to be invisible to humans, with the exception of those Elementals who have the psychic power of clairvoyance. Elementals who are clairvoyant are thought to be able to appear to humans as they desire. It is commonly thought that nature spirits exist in trees, rivers, plants, bogs, mountains and minerals…attaching themselves to almost every natural thing. It is believed that in China the Elementals watch over rice, silk, roads, gateways and other things in nature. Elementals are looked upon as benevolent and maintainers of natural harmony but they are lesser spirits, ruled over and governed by higher spirits such as archangels, often called Lords of the Watchtowers, the Guardians or Mighty Ones. The folklore of the Native North American Tribes, water babies, small, inhabiting lakes, streams, ponds and springs, are not malicious, but are tricksters and like to do things like push fishermen off of rocks as they cross streams, stand on logs over lakes and ponds or make otherwise steady logs bounce until a fisherman falls in, for their amusement, causing these water babies to be feared. Other types of “little people” as these Elementals are called, inhabit the forests and mountains, bestowing powerful medicine upon humans in times of need, for humans are a source of entertainment, but they are not malicious.
The Universal Ether, in the eyes of the ancients is not a tenantless space, but a never-ending ocean, expanse of heaven, earthen paradise and more, full of souls and energy. The Elementals reside in this space. They are not Masters of the Universe, yet they have sway, hold a place in the universe and have from the beginning of time. The immortal gods, our Christian fathers, the mystics, all of the holiest and holistic spirits from the beginning of time, until time falls down and is no more rely upon the Elementals to provide order and keep the earth, fire, air and water clean.
There are a lot of allegedly mythical creatures, that a lot of sane and rational people have claimed to have seen, that people classify as Elementals, but are not. These great creatures are wonders unto themselves, such as Faeries, Elves, Goblins, Tree People, and Sprites. We’ve all seen or heard stories regarding these creatures, ranging from The Hobbit, the Ents in Lord of the Rings and many others and some of us have even experienced moments when we have thought to ourselves or said to hiking or hunting partners, “Wasn’t that tree over there when we came through here earlier?” And, had our partner reply, “Uh, I’m not sure….It couldn’t have been”. I don’t know how many times I’ve had that conversation.
The power and magic of Elementals, their cousins, the Elves, Goblins and others, is legendary. Novels, movies and oral history have been passed down from generation to generation, not just new age hippie stuff, but folklore about Elementals and faeries and more, leading back to the 16th century and before. The power, the magic, the duties and obligations of the Elementals have kept the earth in order for centuries, unlike the Marvel movies, which would have us believe in fantastical creatures from the universe, which we know isn’t true, because it’s Marvel, not DC.
