Absinthe Minded - Somewhere Between Clarity And Club Dread

Writer's picture: Bill TurnerBill Turner

“The first stage is like ordinary drinking, the second when you begin to see monstrous and cruel things, but if you can persevere you will enter in upon the third stage where you see things that you want to see, wonderful curious things.” — Oscar Wilde

So, begins the state of being Absinthe Minded, a blessed state of mind, somewhere between rational thought and club dread, between ultra-clarity and chasing the green fairy.

“Got tight last night on absinthe. Did knife tricks.” —Hemingway

Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein while utilizing the clarity of absinthe. Let that sink in. Oscar Wilde, Hemingway, Shelley and how many others? I have sought clarity through absinthe and it has never let me down. The practical magic of the green fairy is unabashed reality, a clarity that one can count upon every time. The charm of absinthe is its history; the allure is its pour. The enigma of the emerald absinthe comes from the infamous rumors about the effect it has on those who drink it. Absinthe, The Green Lady, gets its nickname from the love affair drinkers have with it, giving it the status of muse, of inspiration, making it a practical magic in their reality. This magic also has a hold among artists and those practicing the dark arts and paranormal. The mental effects of absinthe, ranging from ultra-clarity to madness, sloth and murder have caused it to also be known as the Green Curse. When absinthe was banned in the western world the rumors of its evils became more infamous. It is no longer banned and the magic of the wormword is back.

Absinthe is liquid alchemy, changing your brain into an object capable of extreme clarity, deep thought and the ability to master the paranormal world. The ability to hear class A EVP’s, reach out to the spirit world, see apparitions in ways that you could not without liquid clarity is forever enhanced through the practical magic of absinthe. Ernest Hemmingway called absinthe "brain-warming, idea-changing liquid alchemy". It is said of absinthe that, "It is as if you are here, but, at the same time, your mind also enters some other, higher level of awareness. Suddenly, you gain the capacity to observe and understand reality from another perspective. It is as if you have tapped into some strange but wonderful source of information, understanding and creativity. Your mind is crystal clear, your perception is enhanced, rich creative powers unlocked. Ideas, answers, solutions and inspiration rush towards you from all directions." One doctor, in 1872, had this to say, in his research about absinthe, "The most curious thing about the transformation of the sensorial apparatus -- the phenomenon, at least, that struck me most forcibly in the experiments I conducted on myself -- is that all sensations are perceived by all senses at once. My own impression is that I am breathing sounds and hearing colours, that scents produce a sensation of lightness or of weight, roughness or smoothness, as if I were touching them with my fingers."

It is said that absinthe has magical powers, that witches commonly apply it to their broom sticks. Allegedly the herb of Artemis and absinthe are used to create flying spells and dreams of flying when cast properly by those who know. Absinthe, when used in smudging, aids in breaking spells that have been cast against you, freeing you from negativity in the spirit realm. Keep in mind, it isn’t as if a dark witch is going to walk up to you and place a spell upon you, to your face, magic, particularly dark magic is done stealthily.

If you delve into the world of clarity, into the world of absinthe, then please do so with caution, with tradition and with focus. Do so with the focus of one who seeks answers, one who seeks clarity and the practical magic of one who seeks to become absinthe minded. Gather the appropriate glasses, an absinthe spoon, sugar cubes and do not skimp on the absinthe, get a quality brand (I prefer Mansinthe and wouldn’t drink Lucid…I’ve even spent hundreds of dollars on bottles from the Czech Republic), set aside time and then enjoy yourself, do some writing, scry or journey to the center of your mind.
